Martindale-Hubbell vs Justia for law firms in 2026

Paying for two legal directories and unsure which earns it? This post compares Martindale-Hubbell and Justia tiers, Avvo, Super Lawyers, and doing nothing.

Martindale-Hubbell vs Justia for law firms in 2026

For most firms in 2026, claim the free Justia profile and the free Martindale-Hubbell profile first, then pay for only one placement, and pick Justia if you want paid visibility you can see in a monthly report. Justia lists a free profile plus Gold and Platinum placements, and says its directory draws “over a million visits per month.” Martindale-Hubbell sells a peer-review rating that has run for “more than 130 years,” according to its own ratings page, but neither company publishes a price for its paid tiers.

That last fact shapes everything below. Avvo, Super Lawyers, Lawyers.com, Nolo, and the two vendors in the title all route paid pricing through a sales conversation. So this post compares what each tier includes, what each vendor says about itself, and what nobody has measured, especially whether any of these listings makes ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews recommend your firm.

What does Justia actually sell, and what does it cost?

Justia sells three directory levels: Free, Gold Placement, and Platinum Placement. Justia’s lawyer directory page states that “a basic profile in the Justia Lawyer Directory is free” and lists no dollar amount for Gold or Platinum.

Here is what Justia’s own page says each level includes.

1. Free

The free profile includes a headshot, practice FAQs, an AI bio enhancer, attorney to attorney reviews, a Justia rating badge, client reviews, and participation in Justia Ask A Lawyer. For a solo or small firm, this is the baseline. It costs nothing and it puts your name, practice areas, and a link in a directory that Justia says is the most visited legal directory in the United States. That claim is Justia’s own and we did not verify it independently.

2. Gold Placement

Gold adds a profile without competitor ads, prominent contact information, an AI chat feature, featured practice area and metro placement, a custom tagline and description, custom phone number integration, traffic statistics, and rotation among sponsored positions. The main product is the removal of competitor ads from your own profile page plus a monthly impressions report.

3. Platinum Placement

Platinum keeps the Gold features, drops rotation, and adds a fixed top position. Justia says only one Platinum placement exists per practice area and metro combination, with optional landing pages. This is the scarce product. If a competitor in your city and practice area already holds it, you cannot buy it.

Justia also sells marketing services beyond the directory: Justia Elevate (SEO, website design, blogs) and Justia Amplify (Google Ads management in Starter and Advance packages, plus local and social). Its marketing page lists no prices and sends buyers to a consultation form.

What does Martindale-Hubbell sell now?

Martindale-Hubbell sells peer-review ratings and a connected network of profiles, and its paid products are bundled with Avvo, Lawyers.com, and Nolo. Pricing is not on the vendor’s public pages, so any dollar figure you see in a third-party roundup is not something we can cite.

Martindale’s ratings page describes AV Preeminent as “the highest peer rating standard,” judged by peers on legal expertise, communication skills, and ethical standards. The page states no cost for the rating, no reviewer count, and no numerical statistics. Under the older system, an A rating required at least 10 years of practice and a B required at least 5. The page does not state a years requirement for current ratings.

The commercial side runs through the Avvo pricing page, which lists two levels. Avvo Starter is free: a basic profile, directory listing, peer endorsements, client reviews, and the Q&A forum. ProVantage says “Contact us for current pricing” and adds an enhanced profile across Martindale, Nolo, Lawyers.com, and Avvo, online scheduling, analytics, review management and syndication, and a dedicated account manager. Website creation, consumer leads, and live chat are optional add-ons, also without prices.

Which one wins for a typical firm?

Neither wins outright. The honest answer depends on practice area, city, and whether your referral sources check ratings. Use this as a rule of thumb.

Justia wins on transparency of what you get. Its tier page lists features line by line and promises a monthly report of impressions and page views across Justia and LII. You can test it for a quarter and see whether the numbers justify the invoice.

Martindale-Hubbell wins on credential value for lawyers whose clients and referral sources are other lawyers and corporate buyers. A peer rating is a credential you can print on a bio. Justia’s equivalent is a rating badge and attorney to attorney reviews, which carry less history.

For the head to head on the other pairs, our earlier posts cover them. Avvo vs Justia for law firms compares the consumer-facing side, and Super Lawyers vs Martindale-Hubbell compares the two credential programs.

How do Avvo, Super Lawyers, and doing nothing compare?

Doing nothing is a real option and it is often the right first move. Free profiles on Justia, Avvo, and Martindale exist whether or not you claim them, and claiming costs only time. Avvo’s own page says “claimed and completed profiles are more likely to appear prominently” in attorney comparisons.

Super Lawyers says it selects five percent of the lawyers in a state, grouped by firm size, and quotes a Special Master’s opinion that no purchase is required for inclusion. Selection is a credential, and the paid marketing products come after it. For the decision on that program alone, read Super Lawyers vs Martindale-Hubbell.

Does any of this help you show up in AI answers?

Nobody has published a controlled test showing that a paid directory placement raises your odds of being cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews. We have not run one either, so treat every claim of that kind as untested.

What is plausible but unmeasured: large directories are crawlable pages that mention your name, practice area, and city, so an AI engine could read them when it assembles an answer about local lawyers. What is not established: that Gold or Platinum placement changes that, that a Martindale rating outweighs a Justia badge, or that any engine weights one directory above another. Justia advertises “Practice FAQs for Search & AI” and an “AI Bio Enhancer” on its free profile, which describes a feature, not a measured citation result.

The only way to know is to test your own firm. Ask the same set of client questions in each engine monthly, record which firms and sources appear, and compare against your directory changes. This is a small before and after test, and it is not a substitute for a large controlled study, and a small firm will see noisy results.

What should you do this quarter?

Follow a short sequence that limits spend until you have evidence.

  1. Claim and complete the free profiles on Justia, Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, and Google Business Profile. Use the same firm name, address, and phone number everywhere.
  2. Ask your Martindale or Avvo rep for written pricing on ProVantage and on any Martindale placement. Get the term length and cancellation rules in writing.
  3. Ask Justia for Gold pricing and whether a Platinum slot is open in your practice area and metro.
  4. Pick one paid test, not three. Set a review date at 90 days and a number to beat, such as signed cases attributed to that source.
  5. Record AI answers monthly for ten questions your clients ask, and note whether your firm or any directory page appears.

If a rep refuses to give written pricing or a clear term, that tells you something about the deal.

For the AI side of this decision, including how we would structure a law firm’s profiles, pages, and press so that AI engines have clear sources to read, see our AEO for law firms page. We state plainly that outcomes are not guaranteed and that directory-to-citation effects remain unmeasured.

FAQ

Is Martindale-Hubbell worth it for a small law firm?

For many small firms the free profile is enough, and the paid products are worth buying only if your referral sources check peer ratings. Martindale says AV Preeminent is its highest peer standard, but its public page states no cost or reviewer count. Ask for written pricing, set a 90 day review, and compare any paid test against signed cases from that source.

Is Justia free for lawyers?

Yes. Justia states that a basic profile in its lawyer directory is free, and the free tier includes a headshot, practice FAQs, client reviews, and attorney to attorney reviews. Gold and Platinum are paid placements, and Justia does not publish their prices. Platinum is limited to one holder per practice area and metro, so availability depends on your city and field.

Which is better for getting clients, Justia or Martindale-Hubbell?

Justia is easier to evaluate because its tier page lists features and promises a monthly impressions and page view report. Martindale-Hubbell is stronger as a credential for lawyer to lawyer referrals. Neither vendor publishes conversion data we can cite, so the better choice for your firm is the one whose cost you can tie to signed cases.

Not proven. No controlled test we know of shows that a paid directory placement increases citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews. Directory pages are public and can be read by engines, but whether Gold or Platinum placement changes recommendations is untested. Track your own AI answers monthly before and after any purchase.

How much does Martindale-Hubbell or Justia cost?

Neither publishes prices on its own pages. Justia lists Free, Gold, and Platinum with no dollar amounts and directs buyers to a consultation. Avvo’s pricing page says ProVantage requires contacting the company. Budget for a sales call, request written quotes, and be cautious of price figures in third-party articles, which are not primary sources.

Should a law firm just do nothing with directories?

Not nothing. Claim the free profiles, because they exist whether you claim them or not and they cost only time. What you can skip at first is paid placement. Spend on a paid tier only after you have a written quote, a term you can exit, and a way to measure results.

The short version

Claim the free profiles. Buy one placement, not several. Justia is the easier paid test to measure, and Martindale-Hubbell is the credential play for referral-driven practices. Avvo and Super Lawyers fit specific cases. None of the vendors publishes prices, and none of them can show a controlled result for AI citations, so make your own evidence before you renew anything.
