Claim both, because in 2026 a complete Avvo profile and a complete Justia Lawyer Directory profile each cost $0. Avvo’s own pricing page lists the Avvo Starter tier at Free, and Justia’s own FAQ answers “Is there a fee to be listed in the Lawyer Directory?” with one word: “No.” The harder question is which paid tier deserves money, and for most firms the answer is neither.
Here is the part the sales calls skip. Neither company publishes a rate. Avvo’s pricing page lists its ProVantage bundle, which spans Martindale-Hubbell, Nolo, Lawyers.com and Avvo, as “Contact us for current pricing.” Justia sells Gold Placements and Platinum Placements the same way, by quote, with the note that only one Platinum Placement exists per practice area and metro combination. When a platform will not print a number, the number moves with what the buyer will pay, and a solo estate planner in Boise and a personal injury firm in Houston are not quoted the same thing.
The market you are buying into is crowded. The American Bar Association’s 2025 Profile of the Legal Profession counted 1,374,720 lawyers in the United States, up from 1,355,963 the prior year. Avvo auto-generates a profile for the vast majority of licensed U.S. attorneys it can locate, per its own support documentation, so your competitors are already listed whether they have logged in or not. Paying for placement buys position in a directory, not demand.

What does Avvo cost and what does Justia cost in 2026?
Both baseline profiles are free, and both companies quote their paid tiers privately. Avvo Starter includes a basic profile, a directory listing and Q&A participation at no charge. Justia’s free profile is full featured, including photo, biography, education, websites and social links.
The table below covers the eight platforms that matter in legal, with the honest recommendation for each. Costs are what each platform publishes as of September 2026.
| Platform | Cost | What it actually does | The signal it carries | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Free, per Google | Controls how the firm appears in Search and Maps, including hours, reviews, photos and the keywords report | First party proximity and review volume, the strongest local ranking inputs Google exposes to you | Every firm with a physical office. Do this before anything else on this list |
| Justia Lawyer Directory | Free profile. Gold and Platinum Placements quoted, not published | Free full profile plus syndication into the Cornell Legal Information Institute lawyer directory for claimed profiles | Verified license plus association with a nonprofit legal research institution | Firms that want a clean, free, well linked profile with zero ongoing spend |
| Avvo | Free Starter. ProVantage quoted, not published | Consumer facing profile, client reviews, Q&A forum, the 1.0 to 10.0 Avvo Rating | A numeric rating built from experience, recognition and discipline records, which Avvo states cannot be bought | Consumer facing practices: family, criminal defense, DUI, personal injury |
| Martindale-Hubbell | Free listing. Peer rating not purchasable. Enhanced profile sold inside the ProVantage bundle | Peer Review Ratings on legal ability and ethical standards, judged by other attorneys | AV Preeminent, held by roughly 10 percent of attorneys per Martindale-Hubbell | Referral driven and defense side firms where other lawyers send the work |
| Super Lawyers | Selection cannot be bought. Promotional placements quoted separately | Annual state by state selection using a patented process, U.S. Pat. No. 8,412,564 | Top 5 percent of lawyers in the state, scored on 12 indicators across four firm size categories | Firms already likely to be selected. Nothing to buy until you are |
| Lawyers.com | Bundled into ProVantage, quoted | Consumer facing sister site to Martindale-Hubbell, same profile data | Mostly a duplicate of the Martindale record | Firms already paying for ProVantage. Not a standalone buy |
| Nolo | Free profile. Separate pay per lead program | Consumer legal content site with a directory attached, running since 2005 | Content adjacency, not a credential | Firms that want to test lead cost per matter with a defined budget |
| FindLaw | Packages quoted, not published | Consumer legal content plus directory, sold as managed marketing packages | Domain age and scale, not a peer or license credential | Firms that want an outsourced package and have measured the cost per signed case |
One ownership note worth knowing before a sales call. Thomson Reuters announced on December 2, 2024 that it closed the sale of FindLaw to Internet Brands, the company behind Avvo and Martindale-Hubbell. Nolo joined Internet Brands in 2011. Several of the “independent” directories in a legal marketing pitch deck belong to one parent.
How is the Avvo Rating actually computed?
It is a 1.0 to 10.0 score generated by a model, and Avvo does not publish the weights. Per Avvo’s support documentation, the inputs are experience and background, recognition and contributions, and disciplinary history reported by state bars and regulatory agencies.
Three mechanics matter for a firm deciding what to do. First, client reviews are not a direct input. Avvo separates the rating from reviews on purpose so users see both. Second, peer endorsements from other attorneys do count. Third, Avvo states plainly that advertising, premium products and other paid services do not influence the score, and that recent information carries more weight than older items.
The band labels run from Superb at 10.0 to 9.0 down to Extreme Caution at 1.9 to 1.0, and Avvo displays no rating at all on an unclaimed profile. That is the actual lever. The rating is not a purchase, it is a data completeness problem. A partner with 22 years of practice and three bar committee roles who never claimed the profile shows no rating next to a competitor showing 9.4.
What does Justia’s free profile model actually get you?
Reach into a second directory at no cost. Justia’s FAQ states that registered lawyers can be included in the lawyer directory of Cornell’s Legal Information Institute, which lists only lawyers who have been authenticated. That is a free distribution channel attached to a legal research institution, and it is gated behind claiming, not behind spend.
The paid Justia tiers add position, not credential. Platinum Placements sit in a fixed top spot on Justia and LII listing pages, one per practice area and metro pair, above Gold Placements and free listings. Gold Placements rotate among sponsored positions. Both add a competitor ad free profile, custom taglines and traffic statistics. Justia advertises an average visibility increase of more than 280 times for Platinum, which is an impression metric the company measures itself, not an independently verified figure on cases signed.
Set against the Avvo path: Avvo gives you a rating and a consumer review surface, Justia gives you a free record and a second listing through LII. Consumer facing practices lean Avvo. Most firms should complete both before a dollar moves.
Which platform helps more with AI retrieval versus classic SEO?
Neither is a shortcut, and be careful with claims made in either direction. The mechanism for AI retrieval is grounded search: an assistant issues a query, retrieves crawlable pages, then summarizes and cites them. Directory profiles get retrieved because they rank in conventional search for name and practice-plus-city queries, not because of any special property of being a directory.
Google’s own Search Central documentation is direct about this. Google states you do not need to create machine readable files, AI text files, Markdown or any special schema.org structured data to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that existing SEO fundamentals are what carry over. Schema markup earns rich result eligibility and machine readability. It is not a citation lever. Ahrefs tested 1,885 pages against matched controls and found no significant uplift from schema, with a negative association for AI Overviews specifically.
The traffic math has shifted underneath all of this. Pew Research Center analyzed browsing data from 900 U.S. adults and found users clicked a traditional search result on 8 percent of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15 percent where none did. Clicks on links inside the summary itself happened on 1 percent of visits. The practical read: getting named inside the answer now matters more than getting ranked under it, and no public test isolates how much a claimed Avvo or Justia profile changes citation rates. Anyone selling you a number for that is estimating. Our own breakdown of AEO costs for law firms covers what is measurable and what is not.
Does a claimed profile beat an unclaimed one?
Yes, and it is the highest return move on this entire page because it is free. Avvo will not display a rating on an unclaimed profile at all. Justia states that only lawyers who have claimed their profiles can add Practice Area Services, and unclaimed profiles do not appear in searches for those services.
Unclaimed also means uncorrected. Avvo builds profiles from bar association data, court records and other public sources, so the address, the practice areas and the firm name can all be years stale. Justia’s team will not change information in an unclaimed profile by phone or email request, by policy, so the only path to fixing it is claiming it.
Both require identity verification. Justia verifies by email, phone or photo proof of license, and requires a personal firm email address rather than a generic office inbox. Budget 30 to 60 minutes per attorney per platform the first time. Our Avvo and Martindale playbook covers that setup field by field.
What order should a law firm spend directory money in?
Spend on things you own before things you rent. Here is the order, with the reason attached to each.
1. Google Business Profile, free
Google states that creating and managing a Business Profile costs nothing. It controls your appearance in Search and Maps, surfaces the keywords people used to find you, and holds the review count consumers compare first. Nothing in a paid directory tier outranks a well maintained profile for “family law attorney near me.” The local SEO fundamentals for law firms go deeper on the ranking inputs.
2. Your own website, the only asset you keep
Practice area pages, attorney bios, real answers to the questions clients ask on the phone. Directory profiles disappear when you stop paying or the platform changes its model. Your site does not.
3. Claimed free profiles on Avvo and Justia, $0
Both, completely filled, verified, kept current. This is a one time cost in hours, and it removes the two failure modes that actually hurt: a missing Avvo Rating and a stale Justia record.
4. Reviews and peer endorsements, $0 plus discipline
Reviews feed Google’s local ranking and consumer trust. Peer endorsements feed the Avvo Rating. Martindale-Hubbell peer ratings require at least three years in practice and enough reviews from unaffiliated attorneys. None of it is purchasable, all of it is earnable.
5. Paid placement, only after 1 through 4 are done
If you have completed everything above, tracked your intake by source for a full quarter, and you know your cost per signed matter, then a quoted Justia Platinum Placement or an Avvo advertising package becomes a testable line item. Before that, it is spending to look busy.
Frequently asked questions
Is Avvo or Justia better for a small law firm?
Neither wins outright, because both free tiers cost the same: nothing. Avvo suits consumer facing practices because of client reviews, the Q&A forum and the 1.0 to 10.0 Avvo Rating that prospects compare directly. Justia suits firms that want a clean permanent record plus a free second listing in the Cornell Legal Information Institute directory. A small firm should complete both free profiles and defer any paid tier until intake tracking shows where signed cases actually originate.
Can you pay to raise your Avvo Rating?
No. Avvo’s support documentation states the rating cannot be bought and that advertising, premium products and other paid services do not influence it. The model uses experience, recognition such as awards, publications and peer endorsements, and disciplinary history from state bars. What paying does buy on Avvo is placement and profile features, not the score. The way to move the number is to claim the profile and complete every field the model reads.
How much do Justia Platinum Placements cost?
Justia does not publish a rate. The Platinum page describes the product, including exclusive top placement with only one available per practice area and metro combination, and routes pricing through a consultation with its sales team. Gold Placements work the same way. Expect quotes to vary by practice area competitiveness and metro size, which is exactly why you should know your current cost per signed case before the call.
Do legal directory profiles help you get cited by ChatGPT or Google AI Mode?
They can be retrieved, but treat any specific number with suspicion. AI assistants ground answers in crawlable pages that already rank, and directory profiles often rank for name and practice-plus-city queries. What is documented: Google states no special markup or structured data is required to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. What is not documented: how much a claimed profile changes citation frequency. No public controlled test isolates that.
Are Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell and FindLaw the same company?
They share a parent. Thomson Reuters announced on December 2, 2024 that it closed the sale of FindLaw to Internet Brands, which also operates Avvo and Martindale-Hubbell. Nolo joined Internet Brands in 2011. Avvo’s ProVantage bundle explicitly spans Martindale, Nolo, Lawyers.com and Avvo in a single purchase. Justia and Super Lawyers are separate businesses. Knowing the ownership map stops you from buying the same audience four times.
Do directory profiles create bar advertising compliance issues?
Possibly, and this post is not legal advice. State bar advertising rules vary considerably on claims of specialization, use of ratings and awards in marketing, required disclaimers and record retention for advertisements. Martindale-Hubbell publishes use guidelines for its ratings, and Super Lawyers publishes announcement templates, because several states regulate how those designations may be displayed. Check your own state bar’s current advertising rules, and where a rule is ambiguous, ask your bar’s ethics hotline before publishing.
The directory line is smaller than the pitch makes it sound
Both baseline profiles cost nothing and take an afternoon. That is the entire mandatory portion of this decision. Everything past it is optional spend on rented position in somebody else’s index, sold at a price neither company will print, in a market of more than 1.37 million licensed attorneys per the American Bar Association.
The firms that win the next two years are not the ones with the best Platinum Placement. They are the ones whose own pages answer the questions clients actually ask, whose Google Business Profile is current, and whose free directory records are complete and correct. Subscribe PR builds that order of operations for law firms, and the AEO program for law firms starts with what you already own.
