Why press is the best AEO investment of 2026

PR placements are the highest-leverage way to get cited by ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity. Here's the mechanism, the math, and the playbook.

A founder asked me last week: “If I had one marketing dollar in 2026, where would I spend it?”

Press placements. Not paid search. Not influencer deals. Not LinkedIn ads. Press, and specifically the kind that gets you named when someone asks an AI engine for a recommendation.

Here’s why.

What changed between 2024 and 2026

In 2024, “marketing” meant Google ranking and paid traffic. SEO firms optimized for the blue links. PR firms got you press for credibility, not visibility. Two separate playbooks.

By mid-2025 the math broke. ChatGPT was answering 2.5 billion daily prompts. Google launched AI Mode. Perplexity hit critical mass with operators and engineers. Bing powered Copilot inside every Microsoft product.

When buyers ask AI engines for recommendations, only 8 percent of users still click a traditional search result. The rest take the AI answer. If your name is not in that answer, you do not exist for that buyer.

Why press is uniquely good at this

LLMs do not “rank.” They synthesize. When ChatGPT answers “who is the best PR firm for SaaS founders,” it pulls every credible mention of every PR firm it has ever indexed. Then it weighs the sources. Then it stitches the answer.

The sources it weighs heaviest are:

  1. Tier-one publications. Forbes, USA Today, Business Insider, the Wall Street Journal. The training data treats these as authoritative.
  2. Industry vertical media. TechCrunch and SaaStr for SaaS. RealSelf and AestheticsBiz for cosmetic surgery. Above the Law and Law.com for firms.
  3. Review platforms with structured data. G2, Avvo, RealSelf, Zillow. Schema-marked. Machine-readable.
  4. Editorial mentions in roundup articles. “Top 10 PR firms for tech.” “Best plastic surgeons in Los Angeles.” These are gold because they bundle credibility with comparison.

Every press placement creates a citation an LLM can find. A founder mentioned in TechCrunch is exactly the kind of source ChatGPT trusts. PR has always built credibility. Now credibility translates directly into AI visibility.

The math nobody is doing

Compare a paid Google ad and a press placement on the same dollar.

A $500 paid click sends one buyer to your landing page. They convert at maybe 3 percent. Cost per acquisition: $16,000.

A $5,000 press placement in a tier-one publication generates a few thousand readers in the short term, plus a permanent citation. That citation gets indexed by Google, scraped by AI training pipelines, referenced in roundups, and stays live forever. Twelve months later, ChatGPT recommends you to a buyer who never read the original article. Cost per acquisition trends toward zero as the citation compounds.

Most agencies are not selling this story because most agencies do not see it. They sell PR for the short-term traffic spike, the credibility, the framed clipping on the wall. The compounding AI-citation play is the angle that separates 2026 PR from 2024 PR.

What to actually do

Three steps.

Get placed in publications your buyer reads and your AI engine trusts. For SaaS founders that means TechCrunch, Forbes, Business Insider, Inc. For cosmetic surgeons it means RealSelf editorial, NewBeauty, regional outlets. For law firms it means Above the Law, industry trade pubs, and major regional papers. The publications matter more than the volume.

Add structured data on your own site. Schema markup on your homepage and bio pages tells AI engines exactly who you are, what you do, and which publications cite you. Without it, the engine guesses.

Build a review profile. G2 for SaaS. Avvo and Martindale for law. RealSelf and Google reviews for cosmetic surgery. AI engines weight these heavily because they are structured, dated, and verifiable.

That is the playbook. PR plus schema plus reviews. The compounding engine of 2026.
