Why is my business not showing on Google Maps in 2026

Your business is missing from Google Maps and the calls stopped. Here is the seven step diagnosis, Google's published timelines, and the suspension appeal path.

Why is my business not showing on Google Maps in 2026

Your business is not showing on Google Maps in 2026 for one of seven reasons, checked in this order: unverified Google Business Profile, suspension, hidden address, duplicate listing, local filter, name or category violation, or a profile too new to clear review. Google’s Help Center puts verification review at up to 5 business days; Sterling Sky recorded appeal waits of 5 to 6 weeks in early 2025.

The first three causes cover most cases and take under ten minutes to rule out. Open Business Profile Manager and read the status label, then search your business name in Google Maps from a logged out browser. A “Claim this business” link means unverified. Gone entirely with a “Suspended” label means a hard suspension. Visible for the name but not for what you sell means the filter or Google’s three ranking inputs (relevance, distance, prominence), not a removal.

Do not create a second profile while you diagnose. Google’s suspension page says not to create a new Business Profile while an appeal is under review, and Sterling Sky lists duplicate profiles among its top five suspension triggers. A second listing turns one fixable problem into two suspended ones.

If Maps cannot find you, AI engines probably cannot either. Try the free AI visibility audit and see whether ChatGPT and Google AI Mode name your business for what you sell.

How do I check whether my Google Business Profile is live?

Search your exact business name plus city in Google Maps from an incognito window, then compare it with the status in Business Profile Manager. Four states are possible.

Listing appears with a “Claim this business” link. Nobody verified it, or a suspension stripped your ownership. Google’s “Add or claim your Business Profile” page covers claiming from the Google Maps app: search the name, tap About, tap Claim this business.

Listing appears, no claim link, not in your account. Someone else verified it. Use Google’s request ownership flow.

Listing missing, Business Profile Manager shows “Suspended.” Hard suspension. Google removed the profile from Search and Maps. Skip to the appeal section.

Listing missing, status “Pending” or “Verification needed.” Google has not finished review, which it says takes up to 5 business days and “on rare occasions” longer.

One more check. Sterling Sky found that filtered listings vanish from the desktop Local Finder but reappear when you zoom the map one step in. If you show on zoom, you are filtered, not removed.

What are the seven reasons a business does not show on Google Maps?

The seven causes run from most to least common. Work top to bottom and stop at the match.

1. The profile was never verified

Google states that until you verify, you cannot edit business info, and its appeals page adds that content tied to an unverified profile “might not appear across Google.” Google assigns the verification methods; you cannot choose. Video is Google’s recommended path when offered: live, unedited, at least 30 seconds, recorded from a mobile device inside the profile. Postcard codes, where still offered, arrive within 14 days and expire after 30. Verifying your site in Google Search Console can trigger instant verification. Our video verification guide covers what the footage must show.

2. The profile is suspended

Google suspends profiles that break its guidelines, and it suspends every profile managed by a Google Account that gets restricted. Sterling Sky’s suspension guide, updated September 2026, splits these into soft (listing visible, you lose management) and hard (listing removed from Search and Maps). Its top five triggers: too many edits to key fields at once, an address with no physical presence (PO box, virtual office, coworking desk), a restricted owner or manager account, multiple listings for one business, and a spam prone category such as locksmiths or personal injury.

3. Service area business with a hidden address

Google’s service area page says a business that does not serve customers at its address must remove the address and list up to 20 service areas, bounded by about 2 hours of driving time. That is the rule; the cost is visibility. Whitespark’s 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors survey of 47 local search experts ranked “Address Is Showing on GBP (Not SAB)” seventh of 187 local pack factors, and Sterling Sky’s test on a home services client saw rankings and calls drop after hiding the address and recover after restoring it. A hybrid business (staffed, signed location plus a service area) may show both.

4. A duplicate listing exists

Google’s guidelines allow “only one profile per business” and warn that duplicates disrupt how information displays. When two profiles share a name, address, phone, and website, the filter shows the stronger one and suppresses the other, often the one you manage. Search Maps for your phone number and street address to find strays, then use Google’s duplicate resolution flow rather than deleting anything that holds reviews.

5. Google’s local filter is suppressing you

Google’s local ranking page says results are “mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity.” Sterling Sky’s filter research adds the mechanism: listings that share a name pattern, website, address, or building with a stronger competitor get filtered from the Local Finder, and only the listing with the most authority for that keyword survives. In one documented case a listing ranked 15 or worse moved to position two within hours after the filtering listing was removed.

6. Name or category violation

Google’s “Guidelines for representing your business” bans taglines, service keywords, location descriptors, phone numbers, and fully capitalized words in the name; “Midas Auto Service Experts” is Google’s own example of a name that gets edited or suspended. Categories must complete “this business IS a,” not “this business HAS a.” A wrong primary category hides you from category searches while the profile stays live.

7. The profile is new and still in review

A new profile has no reviews, photos, or citations, and Google has not finished its up to 5 business day review. Service area edits take up to 48 hours to display. A profile 3 days old and missing is normal. A profile 3 weeks old and missing is one of causes 1 through 6.

Why does my business show when I search the name but not the category?

Because Google treats a branded search and a category search as different ranking problems. Your name has one relevant answer, so distance and prominence barely matter. “Emergency plumber” has dozens of relevant answers in the searcher’s radius, and Google’s ranking page says it weighs relevance, distance, and prominence together to pick the few it shows.

Three checks find the gap. Confirm the primary category matches the query; Whitespark’s 2026 panel scored primary category 227 points, the highest of 187 factors, ahead of proximity at 225. Test from a device near the business with location on, because Google says it uses what it knows about the searcher’s location. Then zoom the map one step in; if you appear, a similar listing nearby is filtering you.

BrightLocal’s 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey of 1,002 US adults found Google’s share of review reading fell from 83% to 71% in a year while use of AI tools for local recommendations rose from 6% to 45%. The same profile data feeds Google AI Mode and Gemini answers, so a wrong category costs you on two surfaces.

How do I fix a suspended Google Business Profile?

Fix the violation first, then submit one appeal through Google’s Business Profile appeals tool with evidence attached inside 60 minutes. Google lists the evidence it wants: business registration, a business license, tax certificates, and utility bills (electricity, phone, water, internet) with a name and address that match the profile exactly.

  1. Open the appeals tool signed in to the managing account. It shows the restricted profile, the reason, and the policy Google says you violated.
  2. Correct the profile first: strip keywords from the name, remove a virtual office address, delete duplicates, and remove any manager whose Google Account is restricted. Sterling Sky notes that removing a restricted user is faster than fixing that user’s account.
  3. Submit, then click Add evidence at once. Google closes the evidence form 60 minutes after you open it.
  4. Wait. Google says decisions take up to 5 business days. Sterling Sky’s records show 3 to 5 weeks in late 2022 and 5 to 6 weeks in early 2025. Do not file a second appeal for the same issue.
  5. If denied, Google offers one additional review through a separate form where you can add evidence you left out.

If the account itself is restricted, Google says to appeal the account at the My Account restrictions page first. Our list of common Google Business Profile mistakes covers the edits that trigger these suspensions.

How long does it take for a business to show up on Google Maps?

Up to 5 business days after verification for a clean new profile, per Google, plus up to 48 hours for service area edits. Anything longer is a diagnosis problem, not a waiting problem.

Two fields outside the seven causes still block a profile. Google’s guidelines prohibit website URLs that “redirect or refer” users elsewhere, and Sterling Sky lists a redirecting URL as an automatic suspension trigger. Whitespark’s 2026 panel ranked map pin placement tenth of 187 factors; a pin on the wrong building can push you into the filter with a neighbor.

Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better position, so once the profile is live and unfiltered, the rest is a ranking job. That is a different guide: how to rank on Google Maps picks up where this one ends. If you want the profile handled with the press and answer engine work that builds prominence, Subscribe PR’s services include Google Business Profile inside the AEO retainer.

FAQ

Why did my business disappear from Google Maps overnight?

Most often a hard suspension, which removes the listing from Search and Maps at once. Google emails owners and managers, but Sterling Sky notes the notices are unreliable, so check Business Profile Manager for a “Suspended” label. The next most common cause is a Maps user reporting the listing as spam through Suggest an edit; if Google trusts that user, the edit goes live immediately.

Can I create a new Google Business Profile instead of appealing?

No. Google’s suspension page says not to create a new profile while an appeal is under review, and its guidelines allow one profile per business. A new profile starts with zero reviews and no history, and usually gets suspended as a duplicate of the one you abandoned. Only a Google employee can move reviews between profiles. Appeal the original.

How long does Google Business Profile verification take in 2026?

Google says review takes up to 5 business days after you complete the steps, longer on rare occasions. Video verification runs on the same clock. Postcard codes, where offered, arrive within 14 days and expire after 30. Two paths can be instant: verifying your website in Google Search Console, or bulk verification for chains with 10 or more locations.

Does hiding my address hurt my Google Maps visibility?

Google requires service area businesses to hide the address, and Whitespark’s 2026 expert panel still ranks a visible address seventh among local pack factors. Sterling Sky’s test saw rankings and calls fall after hiding a client’s address and recover after restoring it. If your location is staffed, signed, and receives customers, you qualify as a hybrid business and can show the address while keeping service areas.

Why does my competitor show and I do not when we share a building?

Google’s local filter suppresses listings it considers too similar to a stronger one nearby, and a shared address is one trigger Sterling Sky documents. The listing with more authority for that keyword wins; the other drops out of the Local Finder or falls several positions. Being filtered for one keyword does not mean you are filtered for all of them, so test each category you sell.

What evidence does Google accept for a suspension appeal?

Four types, per Google’s suspension page: official business registration, a business license, tax certificates, and utility bills for electricity, phone, water, or internet. The name and address on every document must match the profile. You get 60 minutes after submitting the appeal to upload them, so have the files ready before you open the appeals tool.

The short version

A business missing from Google Maps is almost always one of three things: nobody verified it, Google suspended it, or Google is showing a similar listing instead of yours. Verification takes up to 5 business days by Google’s clock. Appeals take up to 5 business days on paper and have run 5 to 6 weeks in practice. Filtering can clear in hours once the conflict is removed. Diagnose in that order, fix one thing at a time, and never open a second profile.
