Is Bing Places worth it for a plastic surgery practice in 2026?

Bing Places is free, takes about an hour of staff time, and Microsoft says it keeps a practice's details eligible for AI answers. Here is what it does, what it does not prove, and what a practice should never pay for.

Is Bing Places worth it for a plastic surgery practice in 2026?

Yes, for almost every plastic surgery practice, because it costs nothing but about an hour of staff time and a one to three week wait. Microsoft says a Bing Places listing keeps a business’s address, hours and contact details current and eligible for AI generated answers. Eligible is not cited. Claim it, then measure it, and never pay a vendor monthly to maintain it.

That is the owner’s answer. Bing Places is a free listing, not a channel you budget for. The decision is not whether to spend on it. The decision is who on staff owns it and how you will know whether it did anything.

Nothing here is legal advice or a clinical or outcome claim. It covers marketing visibility for the practice only.

What is Bing Places for Business?

Bing Places is Microsoft’s free business listing, the Bing equivalent of a Google Business Profile. Microsoft relaunched it on October 3, 2025 with a redesigned owner dashboard, a faster import from Google Business Profile that Microsoft says better preserves name, hours and contact details, and a move from bingplaces.com to bing.com/forbusiness. The same post lists deeper integration with Bing Maps and Copilot as ongoing investment, which is a stated plan, not a shipped feature with documentation.

Bing is still a growing business for Microsoft. In its fourth quarter fiscal 2026 results, for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, Microsoft reported search advertising revenue excluding traffic acquisition costs up 10 percent year over year.

Does Bing Places help a practice show up in Copilot or ChatGPT?

Microsoft makes one narrow claim, and it is the only one a practice should rely on. In its February 2026 Bing Webmaster Tools announcement, Microsoft wrote that businesses can register with Bing Places “to help ensure that key details such as address, hours, and contact information remain current and eligible for inclusion in AI-generated responses.”

Read that sentence the way Microsoft wrote it. The listing makes your facts available and correct. It does not promise that Copilot names your practice when a patient asks for a surgeon recommendation. Any vendor who tells you Copilot uses Bing Places as its primary source for local recommendations is quoting a claim Microsoft has not published.

The ChatGPT link is narrower still. OpenAI’s help article on ChatGPT search for Enterprise and Edu says search queries from those workspaces may be shared with the Bing search engine. OpenAI’s consumer search article says only that ChatGPT search partners with third party search providers and does not name them. So Bing feeds some ChatGPT searches on OpenAI’s own word, but OpenAI has not said that a Bing Places listing feeds ChatGPT’s local answers.

What earns the recommendation itself is the same on every engine: reviews, press, procedure pages and third party mentions. We break that down in how AI engines pick which plastic surgeon to recommend.

What does Bing Places cost a practice?

The listing is free. The real cost is staff time and calendar time.

Microsoft’s Bing Places FAQ sets the timeline. A PIN postcard typically arrives in 5 to 6 days and can take up to 12 business days. Phone, text and email verification options appear after you sign in and claim the listing, when Bing offers them for your address. After verification, a listing usually takes 7 to 12 calendar days to publish on Bing.

That puts the full cost at roughly one hour of front office or marketing coordinator time to import, check and complete the listing, plus one to three weeks of waiting. There is no paid tier to buy.

Bing Places vs Google Business Profile vs Apple Business vs paid listing tools

Every free listing comes before any paid tool. Here is how the options stack up for a practice owner.

OptionWhat it costsWhat it feeds, per the platformSetup effortRecommendation
Google Business Profile$0Google Search and Google MapsHigh; categories, photos, services and reviews all matterDo first and keep it complete. See our Google Business Profile guide
Apple Business place card$0Apple Maps, Siri, Safari and Spotlight on Apple devicesMediumDo second. Follow our Apple Maps setup guide
Bing Places$0Bing search and Bing Maps; Microsoft says it keeps details eligible for AI generated responsesLow if imported from a verified Google profileDo third, the same week. One hour of staff time

Paid listing management subscriptionMonthly feePushes the same name, address and phone to many directoriesLow for the practice, ongoing costSkip for a single location practice. Consider only at 10 or more locations

The bottom row is where practices overspend. A one or two location surgical practice can maintain three free listings in an afternoon each quarter. Paying a monthly fee to sync data that rarely changes buys convenience, not visibility.

How should a practice set up Bing Places?

Five steps, in this order.

  1. Fix the Google profile first. The import copies whatever Google has. If the Google name, address or phone is wrong, Bing inherits the error.
  2. Import from Google. Sign in at bing.com/forbusiness and use the Google import. Microsoft built the October 2025 import to carry over name, hours and contact details.
  3. Check every field by hand. Confirm the category is the most specific one Bing offers for a plastic surgery practice, and that the name, address and phone match the website footer character for character. Our NAP consistency guide is written for law firms, and the rules are identical for a clinic.
  4. Complete the listing. Hours, services, website, photos of the building, the team and the office. Leave before and after photos off the listing. A directory card is the wrong place for clinical imagery.
  5. Verify the website in Bing Webmaster Tools. This is what lets you measure, and it is where you submit new pages. Our guide on how to get indexed on Bing covers the steps.

One practice, one listing. Duplicate records for the same address, or separate listings for each surgeon at a single office without a clear reason, split the signal and confuse every engine that reads them.

How do you measure whether Bing Places did anything?

Measure two layers: the website and the phone.

For the website, use the AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools. Per Microsoft’s February 2026 announcement, it shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot, Bing AI summaries and select partner integrations, which pages are cited, and the grounding queries behind those citations. Microsoft says the data is a sample of citation activity, not a full count. In June 2026 Microsoft added Intents, Topics, Citation Share and Compare in preview. Citation Share does not show competitor domains, so it will not tell you which rival surgeon Copilot named instead of you.

Note the limit. The report tracks citations of your website, not of your Bing Places listing. Treat the listing as data hygiene and the report as the scoreboard for the content that earns citations.

For the phone, add “Bing or Copilot” as an option on the intake form and in the front desk script, and tag referral traffic from Bing and Copilot in analytics. Our GA4 AI referral tracking guide shows the setup.

When is Bing Places not worth the time?

Hold off, or keep it in the queue, in four cases.

First, the Google Business Profile is unverified, suspended or wrong. Fix that first, because the Bing import copies it. Second, the practice is moving or rebranding within the next 60 days. Claim after the new address and name are final so you verify once. Third, someone already claimed the listing under an old marketing vendor’s account. Recover ownership before you build anything new, or you will create a duplicate. Fourth, a vendor is charging you a monthly retainer line item called “Bing Places management.” That is a no. The listing is a one time task with quarterly checks.

What Bing Places will not fix: a thin website, few reviews and no press. Those decide whether any AI engine names the practice. The budget split for that work is in what surgeons should spend on marketing, and our work with plastic surgery practices covers that side.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bing Places free for a plastic surgery practice? Yes. Bing Places for Business has no paid tier. The cost is about an hour of staff time to import and complete the listing, plus the wait for verification and publishing. Microsoft’s FAQ says a PIN postcard takes 5 to 6 days, up to 12 business days, and publishing takes 7 to 12 calendar days after verification.

Does a Bing Places listing get my practice recommended in Microsoft Copilot? Microsoft has not said that. Its February 2026 Bing Webmaster Tools post says Bing Places helps keep address, hours and contact information current and eligible for inclusion in AI generated responses. Eligible means available, not cited. Reviews, press and procedure content decide recommendations.

Does ChatGPT use Bing Places? OpenAI has not said so. OpenAI’s Enterprise and Edu help article says search queries from those workspaces may be shared with the Bing search engine. Its consumer search article says ChatGPT partners with third party search providers without naming them. Neither mentions Bing Places listings.

Can I import my Google Business Profile into Bing Places? Yes. Microsoft’s October 2025 relaunch improved the Google import, which carries over name, hours and contact details. Check the category, photos and services by hand afterward, and fix the Google profile before importing, because errors copy across.

Should a practice pay for a listing management service to handle Bing? Not at one or two locations. Google, Apple and Bing listings are all free and change rarely. A paid sync tool starts to make sense for groups with 10 or more locations, where manual updates across every listing become a real staff cost.

How do I know if Copilot is citing my practice website? Verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools and open the AI Performance report. It shows a sample of citations in Copilot, Bing AI summaries and select partner integrations, the cited pages and the grounding queries. It does not show which competitors were cited.

The short version

Bing Places is worth claiming for nearly every plastic surgery practice because it is free, takes about an hour, and keeps the practice’s facts correct where Microsoft’s AI products can read them. It is not a recommendation engine and it is not a line item. Do Google first, Apple second, Bing third, then measure with Bing Webmaster Tools and the intake form.
