Is a Wikipedia page worth it for a plastic surgeon in 2026?

Wikipedia notability rules, conflict of interest policy and paid editing disclosure decide whether a surgeon can have a page. Here is when it is worth pursuing and when to put the budget into press instead.

Is a Wikipedia page worth it for a plastic surgeon in 2026?

For most plastic surgeons, a Wikipedia page is not worth chasing. Wikipedia requires significant coverage in multiple independent, reliable sources, and its own guideline says self-promotion is not a route to an article. A surgeon with national press, a society leadership role or notable published work may qualify. A practice owner without that coverage will not.

What does Wikipedia require before a surgeon gets a page?

Wikipedia’s notability guideline for people sets the bar. A person is presumed notable when they have received significant coverage in published works that are independent of each other and of the subject. The guideline states that “autobiography and self-promotion are not the routes to having an encyclopedia article.”

It also lists what does not count. Entries in biographical dictionaries that accept self-nominations do not add to notability, and neither do web pages about an organization’s own staff or members. That rules out your practice bio page, your RealSelf profile, a Marquis-style directory listing and a press release you wrote or paid for.

What counts is coverage that someone else chose to write: a newspaper feature, a magazine profile, a broadcast segment, an academic citation of your research. This is the same coverage that earns citations in AI answers, which is why the page is a result of press, not a substitute for it.

Can a practice owner write or pay for their own page?

You should not write it yourself. Wikipedia’s conflict of interest policy says “You should not create or edit articles about yourself, your family, or friends,” and describes conflict of interest editing as strongly discouraged.

Paying someone does not remove the conflict. The same policy says “You must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation.” A vendor who sells you a “guaranteed Wikipedia page” and does not disclose the arrangement on Wikipedia is breaking the policy, and you carry the reputational risk.

The policy offers a compliant route: editors with a conflict can propose changes on an article’s talk page using a request edit template instead of editing directly. A volunteer then decides. You do not control the outcome, the wording or the timing.

How much does a Wikipedia page cost a practice?

There is no fee to Wikipedia, and no price you can honestly quote for a page because the page is not for sale. Anyone charging a flat fee is selling research, drafting or press placement, and none of those guarantee the page survives review. Ask any vendor three questions in writing: which independent sources will support notability, how they will disclose the paid relationship, and what happens if the article is rejected or deleted.

If a quote has no line for the independent coverage, the money is going to the wrong place. The coverage is the expensive part, and it is also the part that works without Wikipedia. For what that spend looks like, see is PR worth it for a cosmetic practice.

Does a Wikipedia page help a practice show up in AI answers?

We have no controlled data showing that a Wikipedia page gets a surgeon recommended in ChatGPT or Google AI Mode, and Wikipedia does not publish any. Treat claims to the contrary from a vendor as unproven.

What the data does show is that fewer people click through once an answer is on the page. Pew Research Center analyzed 68,879 Google searches from 900 U.S. adults in March 2025 and found people clicked a result in 8 percent of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15 percent without one. In that environment the thing to build is a consistent, verifiable record of your practice across sources an engine can read. A Wikipedia page is one possible entry in that record, and only for the few surgeons who qualify.

What should a practice do instead?

Build the independent coverage first, because it helps whether or not a Wikipedia page ever exists. Pitch outlets with a real angle, using how cosmetic surgeons land beauty and lifestyle press and press strategy for cosmetic surgery clinics. Frequently asked questions

Is a Wikipedia page worth it for a plastic surgeon? Usually not. Wikipedia requires significant coverage in multiple independent, reliable sources. A surgeon without that press will not qualify, and a page written by the practice breaks the conflict of interest policy. Spend on earned press first.

Can I write my own Wikipedia page as a surgeon? Wikipedia’s conflict of interest policy says you should not create or edit articles about yourself. You can propose changes on the talk page with a request edit template, and an independent editor decides.

Can I pay someone to create my Wikipedia page? Paid editing is allowed only with disclosure. The policy requires you to disclose your employer, client and affiliation for any compensated contribution. A vendor who skips disclosure puts your reputation at risk.

Does my practice website count as a source for notability? No. The notability guideline says web pages about an organization’s own staff or members do not count toward notability. Coverage has to come from independent sources.

Will a Wikipedia page get me cited by ChatGPT? We have no controlled evidence either way, and Wikipedia publishes none. Plan for an accurate, consistent presence across independent sources instead of a single page.

Does a practice brand qualify the same way as a surgeon? Wikipedia treats organizations separately from people, and the independent coverage requirement still applies. Most practices will not meet it without sustained national coverage.

The short version

A Wikipedia page is a result of independent press, not a marketing channel you can buy. If you have national coverage, gather the sources and let an unaffiliated editor decide, with full disclosure. If you do not, put the budget into press and a finished Google Business Profile, which work whether or not Wikipedia ever notices you.
