How to get recommended by ChatGPT in 2026

ChatGPT names a handful of businesses per answer and most companies are not one of them. Here is the order of operations that gets a brand named, with sources.

How to get recommended by ChatGPT in 2026

To get recommended by ChatGPT in 2026, get your business indexed in Bing, get it described consistently on the third-party sites ChatGPT reads, build recent reviews on the platform that governs your category, publish pages that answer the exact question a buyer types, and then test the prompts weekly. ChatGPT search sends rewritten queries to third-party providers including Microsoft Bing and licensed publisher content, per OpenAI’s documentation. Semrush’s three-month citation study found Reddit and Wikipedia at the top of its source list. With 900 million weekly users as of OpenAI’s February 2026 announcement, the recommendation is worth the work.

What decides which businesses ChatGPT recommends?

The third-party record, retrieved fresh at query time. A recommendation is different from a citation. A citation is ChatGPT quoting a page as a source. A recommendation is ChatGPT naming your business as the answer to “who should I hire” or “which product should I buy.” The second depends on what other sites say about you far more than on what your site says about itself.

The retrieval mechanism is documented. OpenAI states that ChatGPT search rewrites a prompt into one or more targeted queries and sends them to third-party search providers, including Bing, alongside content from publishing partners. So the first filter is whether Bing can find you at all. The second filter is what comes back: directory listings, review platforms, forum threads, news coverage, and comparison pages.

The source studies show the mix. Semrush tracked AI citations across three months and found Reddit and Wikipedia leading, followed by established publishers, directories, and review platforms. Ahrefs analyzed 17 million AI citations and found the cited URLs were on average 25.7 percent fresher than organic search results, with ChatGPT’s citations skewing about 458 days newer. Recency and third-party origin are the two properties the retrieved pages share.

What the record does not run through is markup. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD schema between August 2025 and March 2026 against 4,000 matched controls and found ChatGPT citations up 2.2 percent, inside the noise. Schema is useful for rich results and machine readability. It is not how you get named.

Step by step, how do you get ChatGPT to recommend your business?

Five steps, in this order, because each one feeds the next.

1. Confirm Bing indexes your site, then fix whatever blocks it

Search Bing for your business name and your category plus city. If the site is missing, register in Bing Webmaster Tools, submit the sitemap, and check robots.txt for a rule that blocks bingbot. Also verify you are not blocking OAI-SearchBot, the crawler OpenAI names in its documentation for surfacing sites in search results. Nothing else on this list works if the retrieval layer cannot see you.

2. Make the third-party record consistent and complete

Claim and fill every profile a buyer in your category would check: Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Yelp, and the vertical platform, whether that is Avvo and Martindale-Hubbell for a law firm, RealSelf and Healthgrades for a surgeon, G2 and Capterra for software, or Houzz and Angi for a contractor. Same name, address, phone, and description everywhere. ChatGPT reconciles entities across sources, and inconsistency reads as two businesses or none.

3. Build recent reviews on the platform that matters

BrightLocal’s 2025 Local Consumer Review Survey found 83 percent of consumers read reviews on Google. The AI engines read the same profiles. Set a monthly review target, ask every satisfied customer, and answer every review. Recency is what Ahrefs’ 17 million citation study rewards, and a review stream is the cheapest fresh content a business produces.

4. Publish one page per buyer question

Not a services page. A page titled with the question a buyer types, answering it in the first two sentences with a number, then explaining. “How much does a divorce lawyer cost in Denver” and “what does a rhinoplasty consultation include” are the shape. These pages are what get retrieved when ChatGPT rewrites the prompt into targeted queries.

5. Earn pages on sites ChatGPT already retrieves

A mention in a trade publication, a regional business journal, a well-read newsletter, or a Reddit thread where a real customer names you. Semrush’s study shows these are the source types at the top of the list. One credible third-party page a quarter beats a year of rewriting your own homepage.

How do you test whether ChatGPT recommends you?

Write 20 prompts a real buyer would type, run them weekly in ChatGPT with search enabled, and log three things: whether your business is named, which businesses are named instead, and which sources the answer cites. This is the only measurement that matters, and most companies never do it.

The prompt set should span the buying journey. “Best [category] in [city].” “[Category] near me that does [specific thing].” “Is [your business] good.” “[Competitor] vs [your business].” “How much does [service] cost in [city].” Run each with the location and the wording a customer would use, not the wording your marketing team uses.

Log the cited sources every time. If the answer names three competitors and cites Yelp, a local news story, and a Reddit thread, you have the map: those are the three surfaces that decide the recommendation in your category, and none of them is your website. If your business appears in the sources but not in the recommendation, the record exists and the description is weak or stale. If it appears in neither, start at step one.

Tools can automate this. Otterly.ai, Semrush’s AI Visibility Toolkit, Profound, and Peec AI all track named prompts across engines and report which sources were cited. Published entry pricing starts at $29 to $99 a month. For a single business, a spreadsheet and an hour a week does the same job.

They optimize the one property they control and ignore the ones ChatGPT reads. Three mistakes account for most of the wasted effort.

The first is treating it as an on-site project. Schema, FAQ blocks, and meta descriptions are the standard package, and the Ahrefs schema test showed the main one does not move citations. The engine builds its recommendation from the third-party record. A business with a perfect website and 12 reviews loses to a business with a mediocre website, 300 reviews, and a mention in the local business journal.

The second is asking ChatGPT once and drawing a conclusion. Answers vary by session, by phrasing, and by whether search is enabled. The Pew Research Center’s tracking of 900 U.S. adults found that when Google showed an AI summary, users clicked a traditional link on 8 percent of visits versus 15 percent without, which is the same shift ChatGPT’s answers produce: the name in the answer gets the call. One prompt on one day tells you nothing about the pattern.

The third is expecting speed. Google’s own guidance for hiring an SEO gives four months to a year for organic improvements to show benefit, and ChatGPT’s retrieval adds a freshness lag as new pages get indexed by Bing and picked up in answers. Expect 60 to 90 days before tracked prompts move, and six months before the change is stable.

For the mechanics of getting a specific page quoted as a source, which is a related but different job, see our guide to how to get cited by ChatGPT. For Google’s equivalent, the AI Overviews ranking guide covers the overlap and the differences.

Does the same method work for Perplexity, Google AI Mode, and Claude?

Mostly, with one difference per engine. The third-party record, reviews, and question-format pages carry across all of them. The retrieval layer is what changes.

Google AI Mode and AI Overviews draw on Google’s index, so Google Search Console and Google Business Profile matter more there than Bing does. Ahrefs measured a 34.5 percent lower clickthrough rate for the top result across 300,000 keywords when an AI Overview appeared, which is why being named inside the Overview now matters as much as ranking below it.

Perplexity runs its own retrieval and shows sources prominently, and its source mix in the Semrush study leaned toward publishers and reference sites. Fresh, well-structured third-party coverage moves it fastest.

Claude searches the web when enabled and cites sources in-line, and its answers to “who should I hire” questions lean heavily on directories and review platforms in the categories we track.

The practical consequence is that the five steps above are the shared foundation, and the engine-specific work is the last 20 percent. A business that fixes the record, builds reviews, publishes question pages, and earns third-party coverage will move on all four engines. One that chases engine-specific tricks will move on none.

Frequently asked questions

Can you pay ChatGPT to recommend your business?

Not in the organic answer. OpenAI launched ads inside ChatGPT in the United States in February 2026, and merchants can supply product feeds for shopping results, but the recommendation in a standard answer is drawn from retrieved sources rather than sold. Paid placements are labeled. The way to be named in the answer itself is the third-party record: reviews, directories, and coverage.

Sixty to 90 days before tracked prompts begin to move, and about six months before the change is stable. The lag comes from Bing indexing new pages, review platforms updating, and third-party coverage being published. Google’s own guidance for organic search improvements is four months to a year, and AI retrieval sits on top of that timeline.

Does ChatGPT use Google or Bing?

Bing, plus other providers. OpenAI’s documentation says ChatGPT search rewrites prompts into targeted queries and sends them to third-party search providers, naming Microsoft Bing, along with content from publishing partners. A business that is invisible in Bing is invisible to ChatGPT search regardless of its Google rankings. Register in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit a sitemap as the first step.

Do reviews affect ChatGPT recommendations?

Yes, through the sources ChatGPT retrieves. Review platforms and directories appear high in the source mix Semrush measured across three months, and Ahrefs’ 17 million citation study found cited pages 25.7 percent fresher than organic results, which a steady review stream provides. BrightLocal’s 2025 survey found 83 percent of consumers read Google reviews, and the engines read the same profiles.

The only controlled test says no. Ahrefs tracked 1,885 pages that added JSON-LD schema against 4,000 matched control pages and found ChatGPT citations changed by 2.2 percent, too small to distinguish from noise. Schema is worth implementing for rich results and machine readability. The recommendation comes from what third-party sites say about you, not from markup on your own pages.

Check Bing for your business name today. If it is missing, register in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. Then complete the profile on the one platform your category runs on, whether that is Google Business Profile, Yelp, Avvo, RealSelf, or G2, and ask your last ten happy customers for a review. Those three actions cost hours, not dollars, and they are what the engine reads first.

The recommendation lives outside your website

ChatGPT names a business because the sources it retrieves agree that the business is the answer. Bing has to find you, the directories and review platforms have to describe you consistently and recently, your pages have to answer the literal question, and at least a few credible third parties have to have said your name. Do those in order, test the prompts weekly, and the recommendation follows. Skip to the markup and the meta tags and you are optimizing the one page the engine reads last.
