Media monitoring costs $0 with Google Alerts, $199 to $599 a month on annual billing for self-serve tools like Brand24, and a custom quote for Meltwater, Cision, Talkwalker and Muck Rack in 2026. Brand24 publishes its top tier at “from $1499 per month, billed annually,” which is the only enterprise-grade figure any of these vendors puts on a public page. Everything else above that line is negotiated.
That gap is the whole buying problem. A one-person firm that needs to know when a local paper mentions it has no reason to pay what a global consumer brand pays to track broadcast, print and social in 40 languages. BuzzSumo, Mention and Muck Rack all sit between those two extremes, and each one prices a different thing: keywords, alerts, seats, or the size of a media database.
Below you will find the published prices, the vendors that refuse to publish, what drives a quote up, and an honest case for staying on the free tier.

What does media monitoring actually cost in 2026?
Published prices run from $0 to roughly $1,499 a month. Google Alerts is free. Brand24 lists $199 to $599 a month on annual billing for its four self-serve plans, and BuzzSumo lists $199 to $999 a month. Meltwater, Cision, Talkwalker and Muck Rack publish no dollar figures at all and ask you to request a quote.
Two rules of thumb hold up across vendors. First, the monthly price you see is almost always the annual-billing price, so the monthly-commitment price is higher. Brand24 lists its Individual plan at $249 on monthly billing and $199 on annual billing, and its Business plan at $699 against $599. Second, a quote-only vendor is selling a bundle, not a monitor. Meltwater says on its pricing page that “your quote is customized to your goals, the modules you choose, and the scale of your program.” You pay for modules you may not open.
Annualized, the arithmetic looks like this. Brand24 Individual at $199 a month is $2,388 a year. Brand24 Business at $599 is $7,188. BuzzSumo’s PR and Comms plan at $299 a month is $3,588. Brand24’s Enterprise floor at $1,499 a month is $17,988 a year. Those are the only anchors with a published source, so treat anything higher as a number you have to get from a sales call.
What do the self-serve tools charge?
Self-serve tools publish their prices, cap what you get, and let you start without a sales call. Brand24 and BuzzSumo are the two that still show full price ladders on their own pricing pages, and they meter different things: Brand24 meters keywords and mentions, BuzzSumo meters alerts and seats.
1. Brand24
Brand24 lists five plans on its pricing page. Individual is $199 a month on annual billing ($249 monthly) for 3 keywords, 2K mentions a month and 1 user. Team is $299 ($349 monthly) for 7 keywords, 10K mentions and unlimited users. Pro is $399 ($499 monthly) for 12 keywords and 40K mentions. Business is $599 ($699 monthly) for 25 keywords and 100K mentions. Enterprise starts at $1,499 a month billed annually with custom limits. Brand24 offers a 14-day trial with no credit card and a 30-day money-back guarantee on non-custom plans.
2. BuzzSumo
BuzzSumo’s four plans are Content Creation at $199 a month (1 user, 2 alerts), PR and Comms at $299 (5 users, 5 alerts), Suite at $499 (10 users, 10 alerts) and Enterprise at $999 (30 users, 50 alerts), per its pricing page. The page says paying annually saves 20 percent on the standard tiers, and the Enterprise tier is annual only. BuzzSumo’s strength is finding what content and journalists are getting traction, so it overlaps with a PR database as much as with a pure monitor.
3. Mention
Mention is the cautionary tale of 2026. Mention’s own support page states that “as of July 1, 2026, Mention is no longer sold as a standalone product.” Its old Solo, Pro, Pro Plus and Company plans are legacy, kept only for existing customers, and the current offering is Agorapulse Listening, sold through sales as an add-on to Advanced or Tailored Agorapulse plans or standalone. Many roundups still list Mention’s old self-serve prices. Do not budget from them.
Which vendors make you ask for a quote?
Meltwater, Cision, Talkwalker and Muck Rack all sell through demos and custom proposals. Their pricing pages tell you what is in the package, not what it costs, so any dollar figure you see elsewhere for these four is not coming from the vendor.
1. Meltwater
Meltwater states that it “uses tailored pricing rather than a one-size-fits-all list,” and that your quote depends on goals, modules and program scale. No dollar figures appear on its pricing page.
2. Cision
Cision directs buyers to a “Request pricing” form for CisionOne and publishes no figures. Cision bundles monitoring with a journalist database and distribution, which is why a Cision quote is rarely a pure monitoring price.
3. Talkwalker
Talkwalker lists three tiers, Core, Analyze and Business, and tells buyers to “pick your plan to get a custom quote.” It publishes no price.
4. Muck Rack
Muck Rack lists Starter, Standard and Premier for both brands and agencies. Its page says “pricing depends on a few factors specific to your team including the number of users,” and offers a customized proposal. Muck Rack is closer to a media relations platform with monitoring attached, so compare it against the databases in our guide to the best media databases for PR rather than against Brand24.
How do the options compare?
Use this table to match your situation to a price band. Prices come from each vendor’s own pricing page, and “quote only” means no figure is published.
| Tool | Published price | Billing | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Alerts | $0 | Free | Founders and small firms tracking a name or a handful of terms |
| Brand24 Individual | $199/mo annual, $249/mo monthly | Self-serve | One person tracking up to 3 keywords |
| Brand24 Business | $599/mo annual, $699/mo monthly | Self-serve | Teams watching 25 keywords across social and web |
| Brand24 Enterprise | From $1,499/mo, billed annually | Annual | Large keyword and mention volumes |
| BuzzSumo PR and Comms | $299/mo, annual | Annual savings | Small PR teams that also want content and journalist research |
| BuzzSumo Suite | $499/mo, annual | Annual savings | Larger teams that need 10 seats and alerts |
| Meltwater | Quote only | Custom | Enterprise teams wanting monitoring plus modules |
| Cision | Quote only | Custom | Teams that also want a media database and distribution |
| Talkwalker | Quote only | Custom | Social listening at scale |
| Muck Rack | Quote only | Custom | PR teams that live in journalist outreach |
Our call: under $3,000 a year, choose Google Alerts or Brand24 Individual. Between $3,000 and $9,000, Brand24 Team through Business or BuzzSumo’s PR plan. Above that, get two or three quotes and ask each vendor to price monitoring alone.
What pushes a monitoring quote up?
Four variables move a quote, and you control all of them. Seats, the volume of mentions, the breadth of sources, and the add-on modules each change the price. Because the quote-only vendors do not publish their math, ask each one to itemize these four before you compare totals.
1. Seats
Muck Rack says outright that users change its price. Brand24 and BuzzSumo show the same logic in public: BuzzSumo goes from 1 user at $199 to 30 users at $999.
2. Mention volume and keywords
Brand24’s ladder runs from 2K mentions on 3 keywords to 100K mentions on 25 keywords before it moves to custom limits. If your brand name is a common word, you will burn volume on noise.
3. Source coverage
Social and web are cheap to monitor. Print, broadcast and paywalled news cost the vendor licensing money, which is why bundles that include them are quote-only.
4. Bundled modules
Meltwater prices by module. Cision bundles a database and distribution. If you only want mention alerts, a bundle is a tax. For a deeper look at tracking coverage by firm type, read our post on press mention monitoring for firms.
Is free media monitoring enough?
Free is enough if you track fewer than about five terms, you do not need a shareable report, and a missed mention costs you little. Google’s own help page says you can get emails when new results for a topic show up in Google Search, and you can set the frequency, sources, language, region and number of results.
Free is enough if all of these are true:
- You are tracking your own name, firm name and one or two competitors.
- You read the alerts yourself and do not need a team inbox.
- You are not running a crisis-sensitive brand where a few hours matter.
- You do not need to prove coverage volume to a client or board.
Free stops being enough when you need history, sentiment scoring, social posts, exports, or several people reacting to the same mention. Google Alerts only surfaces what Google Search indexes and emails you, so it has no dashboard, no team workflow and no reporting. If a client asks for a monthly coverage report, you need something that produces one. If you are weighing whether coverage is paying off, that is a measurement question for after the alerts arrive.
Does monitoring cover AI assistants?
Most monitoring products were built to watch web pages, social posts and news. Whether a given tool tracks what ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Mode says about your brand depends on the vendor, and the pricing pages above do not say. Check each vendor’s feature list for AI answer tracking before you assume it is included. Our post on AI brand monitoring explains how that category differs from classic mention tracking.
The practical point: a mention alert tells you a page exists. It does not tell you whether an AI assistant repeats it when a buyer asks about your category. If you also want the coverage itself, that is a placement problem, and our PR placement services exist for it. Monitoring only measures it.
FAQ
Is Google Alerts really free?
Yes. Google Alerts is a free Google service that emails you when new Search results match a topic you set. You can control frequency, source types, language and region. It has no paid tier, no dashboard and no team seats, so it works as a personal tripwire rather than a reporting system.
How much does Brand24 cost?
Brand24 lists Individual at $199 a month on annual billing or $249 monthly, Team at $299 or $349, Pro at $399 or $499, and Business at $599 or $699. Enterprise starts from $1,499 a month billed annually. It offers a 14-day trial with no credit card and a 30-day money-back guarantee on non-custom plans.
How much does Meltwater cost?
Meltwater does not publish prices. Its pricing page says quotes are tailored to your goals, the modules you choose and the scale of your program, and sends buyers to sales. Any specific Meltwater dollar figure you find elsewhere did not come from Meltwater, so ask for a written quote and have it itemized by module.
Is Mention still available?
Not as a standalone product. Mention’s support page says that as of July 1, 2026, Mention is no longer sold as a standalone product. Its current offering is Agorapulse Listening, handled through Agorapulse’s sales team. Existing Mention customers keep their current plans, but new buyers should budget from a sales quote, not old listed prices.
Why do monitoring vendors hide their prices?
Pricing varies by seats, sources and modules, so a vendor can quote each buyer a different bundle. Muck Rack says pricing depends on factors specific to your team, including the number of users. Hiding the list price also makes comparison shopping harder, which is why asking for itemized quotes from two or three vendors matters.
What should a small business spend on media monitoring?
Start at $0 with Google Alerts. If you outgrow it, a self-serve plan like Brand24 Individual at $199 a month on annual billing is the lowest published paid entry point in this comparison, about $2,388 a year. Only move to quote-only platforms when you need broadcast and print coverage, multiple seats or formal reporting.
The short version
You can monitor media for free, for a few thousand dollars a year, or for a negotiated enterprise contract, and the price tracks seats, volume and bundled modules, not quality. Start with Google Alerts, move to Brand24 or BuzzSumo when you need a dashboard, and ask quote-only vendors to price monitoring alone.
