A branded podcast costs under $1,000 a year in software if your own team produces it, about $5,280 to $21,600 a year for an outside editing service such as We Edit Podcasts, and $25,200 to $78,000 a year for full service production at the monthly range Resonate Recordings publishes in 2026. The audience is real: Edison Research’s Infinite Dial 2026 found 58% of Americans 12 and older consumed a podcast in the last month. What decides your budget is who does the work each week, not the microphone.
This post prices a company producing its own show. It does not cover paying to guest on other shows or buying ads on them; those are different purchases with different math.
How much does a branded podcast cost in 2026?
At published prices, a branded podcast runs from $0 in tools to $6,500 a month for a full service studio. The spread comes from labor. Software from Buzzsprout, Riverside and Descript is cheap; editing, producing and promoting every episode is where the money goes.
Prices below come from each vendor’s own pricing page, read in October 2026. Annual totals are monthly prices times 12. “Quote only” means the firm lists no dollar figure.
| Option | Published price | Annual cost | What you still do yourself | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DIY in house | Spotify for Creators hosting $0; Buzzsprout $15 to $25 a month; Riverside Pro $24; Descript Creator $24 (annual billing) | About $0 to $880 in software | Everything: booking, recording, editing, publishing, promotion | Teams with a natural host and a staffer who can edit |
| Freelance editor | Upwork says podcast editors generally cost $20 to $31 an hour | Depends on hours per episode | Planning, booking guests, hosting, promotion | Shows that record well but have no editor |
| Editing service | We Edit Podcasts: $440 a month for 2 audio episodes, $800 for 4 | $5,280 to $9,600 audio; $11,760 to $21,600 video | Strategy, guests, promotion | Teams that want a fixed monthly bill for post production |
| Full service studio | Resonate Recordings: $2,100 to $6,500 a month; Pacific Content, Lower Street and Quill are quote only | $25,200 to $78,000 at Resonate’s range | Showing up to record | Brands that need strategy, sound design and audience growth handled |
| Video add-on | Buzzsprout adds $10 a month for video distribution; We Edit Podcasts charges $980 vs $440 for 2 episodes | Adds $120 to about $12,000 a year | Camera setup, lighting, thumbnails | Shows chasing YouTube and Spotify video viewers |
| Don’t launch, guest instead | $0 to booking agency fees | Often lower than one season of production | Pitching or hiring a booker | Companies without someone who will host for a year |
The rule: tools cost little at every tier; you are buying skilled labor, from payroll or from a vendor.

What does each production option include?
Each option shifts different jobs off your team. DIY keeps every task in house, a freelancer or editing service like We Edit Podcasts takes post production, and a full service studio such as Pacific Content, Lower Street or Resonate Recordings takes strategy, production and audience development.
1. DIY in house: cheap tools, expensive hours
Spotify for Creators advertises “Host for free, distribute everywhere,” with video uploads included. Paid hosts add analytics and support: Buzzsprout lists Audio at $15 a month and Audio + Video at $25 on annual billing, and Libsyn lists Basic at $12, Advanced at $25 and Max at $150 a month, each with up to 100GB of video uploads a month. For recording, Riverside lists Pro at $24 a month billed annually ($29 monthly) with 5 recording hours and up to 4K video. For editing, Descript lists Creator at $24 a month on annual billing ($35 monthly) with 30 media hours and 4K export.
The hidden line item is staff time. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual wage for film and video editors at $75,420 as of May 2025, about $36 an hour on a 2,080 hour year. If an employee spends 8 hours on each episode, that is roughly $290 of salary per episode. The 8 hours is our illustration, not a measured benchmark; track your own first three episodes.
2. Freelance editor: pay by the hour
Upwork’s hiring page says a podcast editor “generally costs $20 to $31 per hour,” depending on scope, episode length and experience. A freelancer cuts the edit, cleans audio and exports files, but most will not book guests, write show notes or plan the season unless you pay for that scope.
3. Editing service: a fixed monthly bill
We Edit Podcasts publishes flat plans for episodes up to 60 minutes: audio editing at $440 a month for 2 episodes or $800 for 4, and a writing plan that adds show notes and transcripts at $900 for 2 or $1,640 for 4. That works out to $200 to $450 per audio episode. You still own the show’s strategy, guest list and promotion.
4. Full service studio: strategy through distribution
Resonate Recordings states its full service production “generally runs between $2,100 and $6,500 a month,” set by format, episode count and whether video is needed. Pacific Content, Lower Street and Quill do not publish prices. Lower Street’s contact form asks for an annual budget, with brackets from under $10,000 to $150,000 and up, which signals the range of clients it serves rather than a price. Pacific Content’s services page lists show development, host casting and coaching, sound design, paid promotion and brand lift studies, so a studio quote often bundles marketing that DIY budgets leave out.
How much does a video podcast add to the cost?
Video adds little at the hosting layer and a lot at the editing layer. Buzzsprout charges $10 a month more for its Audio + Video plan, and Libsyn includes video on every plan. Editing is the jump: We Edit Podcasts charges $980 a month for 2 video episodes against $440 for audio only.
5. Video add-on: the editing bill more than doubles
At We Edit Podcasts, 4 video episodes cost $1,800 a month, or $21,600 a year, against $9,600 for 4 audio episodes. Recording tools cover video at their middle tiers: Riverside Pro records up to 4K, and Descript Creator exports 4K. Cameras and lighting are a one time purchase on top.
The reason to pay it is where the audience watches. YouTube says it passed 1 billion monthly active viewers of podcast content in January 2025 and that viewers watched more than 400 million hours of podcasts a month on living room devices in 2024. Spotify said at its May 2026 Investor Day that more than 500 million users have streamed a video podcast, up nearly 50% year over year. Edison’s Infinite Dial 2026 found 57% of Americans 12 and older have both listened to and watched a podcast.
Is there an audience for a company’s own show?
Yes, but it is crowded. Edison Research’s Infinite Dial 2026 estimates 230 million Americans 12 and older have listened to or watched a podcast, and 45% consumed one in the last week. Your branded show competes with Spotify, YouTube and Apple Podcasts catalogs for those hours.
Three figures from that study, which surveyed 2,050 people age 12 and older in January 2026:
- Reach: 80% of Americans 12 and older have ever listened to or watched a podcast.
- Monthly: 58% consumed one in the last month, rising to 68% among 35 to 54 year olds, the age band that holds many budget owners.
- Weekly: 45%, about 130 million people.
Those numbers describe podcast listening overall, not branded shows. No primary source we found measures how many listeners a typical company podcast earns, so treat any vendor’s average download claim as marketing until you see the data behind it.
Monetizing is a separate question. Spotify’s Partner Program, after its January 2026 update, requires 1,000 engaged audience members and 2,000 hours consumed over 30 days plus 3 published episodes. Most branded shows exist to build trust and pipeline, so budget as if the show earns nothing directly.
What hidden costs do branded podcast budgets miss?
The biggest missed costs are the host’s time, promotion and text that search engines can read. A quote from a studio like Resonate Recordings or an editing plan from We Edit Podcasts covers production; your executive’s prep, guest outreach and distribution on LinkedIn and YouTube usually sit outside it.
Five line items to price before you commit:
- Host time. A weekly show means a weekly recording, plus prep. If the host is a founder or partner, that hour has the highest cost on the team.
- Guest booking. Someone has to find, invite and schedule guests. Studios sometimes include it; editing services do not.
- Promotion. Pacific Content lists paid promotion as part of its process, which tells you launches often need media spend to find listeners.
- Transcripts and episode pages. AI assistants and search engines read text, not audio. We Edit Podcasts prices show notes and transcripts as a higher tier, $900 against $440 for 2 episodes. Our guide to GEO for podcasts covers why episode pages matter.
- A full season. Spotify’s own Partner Program threshold of 3 published episodes is a floor, not a plan. Budget at least 12 months before you judge results; that is our judgment, not a published benchmark.
When should a company guest on other shows instead of launching one?
Guest instead when no one on the team will host every week for a year, when your budget covers less than one season of production, or when you need reach faster than a new show can build it. Booking on established shows on Spotify and YouTube borrows an audience that already exists.
The math favors guesting for most smaller companies. A full year of We Edit Podcasts’ 4 episode audio plan is $9,600 before any host time or promotion, and that buys editing for a show with zero listeners on day one. A guest spot puts your expert in front of a host’s existing audience and earns a published episode page on someone else’s site. Our breakdown of podcast guesting costs prices booking agencies and marketplaces.
Launch your own show when you have a host with a point of view, at least 12 months of budget, and a reason the show must belong to you, such as a customer community or a niche no current show covers. Pair it with earned coverage so the people you interview, and the outlets that cover your industry, mention the show. That earned layer is the work Subscribe PR does through its services, and it runs alongside a show rather than replacing one.
FAQ
How much does it cost to start a branded podcast?
Starting can cost close to $0 in software. Spotify for Creators offers free hosting, and Riverside and Descript both list free plans with limits. Paid tools such as Buzzsprout at $15 a month, Riverside Pro at $24 and Descript Creator at $24 on annual billing total about $63 a month. The real startup cost is the time to plan a format, record a few episodes before launch and edit them, or the fee for a service to do it.
How much do podcast production companies charge?
Few publish prices. Resonate Recordings states its full service production generally runs $2,100 to $6,500 a month, depending on format, episode count and video. We Edit Podcasts publishes editing plans from $440 a month for 2 audio episodes to $1,800 for 4 video episodes. Pacific Content, Lower Street and Quill quote per project, so ask each for a written scope covering episodes, video, promotion and reporting.
Is a video podcast worth the extra cost?
Often, if your audience watches YouTube or Spotify. YouTube reported more than 1 billion monthly podcast viewers in January 2025, and Spotify says more than 500 million users have streamed a video podcast. Hosting video adds little, $10 a month on Buzzsprout, but editing more than doubles: We Edit Podcasts charges $980 for 2 video episodes against $440 for audio. Test video clips first if the budget is tight.
How long should a company run a branded podcast?
Plan for at least 12 months before judging it. That is our judgment from how slowly a new show builds an audience, not a published benchmark. Edison Research’s Infinite Dial 2026 shows 58% of Americans 12 and older consume podcasts monthly, but a new show must earn a place in those routines one episode at a time. Budgeting one short season and stopping usually wastes the setup cost.
Can a branded podcast make money?
It can, but few branded shows are built for it. Spotify’s Partner Program, as updated in January 2026, requires 1,000 engaged audience members and 2,000 hours consumed in the last 30 days plus 3 published episodes. Most company shows are judged on pipeline, recruiting or trust rather than ad revenue. Budget the show as a marketing cost and treat any payout as a bonus.
Should we hire a podcast producer in house?
Only if the show is a long term channel. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median annual wage for film and video editors at $75,420 as of May 2025, before benefits. That is more than Resonate Recordings’ published low end of $2,100 a month, or $25,200 a year, for full service production. In house makes sense when one hire can produce several shows or other video work.
The short answer
Price the labor, not the gear. Hosting can be free on Spotify for Creators, and Riverside plus Descript cost under $50 a month, so a branded podcast’s budget is really a choice of who edits, produces and promotes it: your staff, an editing service at $440 to $1,800 a month, or a studio at $2,100 to $6,500 a month. If no one will host every week for a year, guest on established shows first and launch later.
