The best email marketing platform for a small business in 2026 depends on list size: Brevo’s free plan allows 300 emails a day, MailerLite’s free plan covers 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month, Mailchimp Essentials starts at $13 a month for 500 contacts, and Constant Contact Lite starts at $12. Kit offers a free plan for up to 10,000 subscribers if you sell content or courses.
Every platform below publishes its prices, and each has a real limit that the table names. We priced Mailchimp, Constant Contact, MailerLite, Kit and Brevo from their own 2026 pricing pages.
Whichever you pick, three rules apply: the CAN-SPAM Act allows penalties of up to $53,088 per violating email, Gmail treats senders near 5,000 messages a day as bulk senders, and a spam rate of 0.3 percent or higher costs you support access.

Which email marketing platforms are best for small business in 2026?
Five platforms cover most small businesses: Mailchimp for brand familiarity and integrations, Constant Contact for phone support and event tools, MailerLite for low cost with full features, Kit for creators and newsletter sellers, and Brevo for volume-based sending. The table shows price, free limits, the best fit and the main limitation of each.
| Platform | Starting price (2026) | Free plan | Best for | Real limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MailerLite | Comfort $12 a month, Power $25 | 250 subscribers, 2,500 emails a month | Owners who want every feature at low cost | Free plan is small, and cost grows with subscriber count |
| Brevo | Paid tiers start with Starter, 5,000 emails a month | 300 emails a day, about 9,000 a month | Businesses that send often to small lists | Pricing is volume based, so check the exact tier before buying |
| Kit | Creator $33 a month for 1,000 subscribers, Pro $66 | Up to 10,000 subscribers | Creators selling content, courses, newsletters | More expensive than general tools once you add automations |
| Mailchimp | Essentials $13, Standard $20, Premium $350 (500 contacts) | 250 contacts, 500 emails a month | Teams that need many integrations | Free plan is tight, and Premium jumps to $350 |
| Constant Contact | Lite $12, Standard $35, Premium $80 | Free trial, no free plan | Owners who want phone and chat support | Lite includes only one automation template and one user |

How do the five platforms differ in 2026?
The platforms differ mainly in free limits, automation access and how they scale with contacts. Each of the five buckets below gives the reason to choose and the reason to pass, using published 2026 limits.
1. MailerLite: lowest cost with full features
MailerLite states that every paid plan gets its full feature set, so you pay for subscriber count and volume, not features. Comfort starts at $12 a month with 50 automations, and Power at $25 adds unlimited automations and users. The free plan has 250 subscribers, 2,500 monthly emails and 2 seats. Pass if you need a large integration marketplace or phone support.
2. Brevo: volume-based sending
Brevo’s free plan allows 300 emails a day, about 9,000 a month, with email and SMS capability. Starter begins at 5,000 emails a month and Professional at 150,000. It suits a business that emails a small list often. Pass if you want simple per-contact pricing, because Brevo prices by send volume and we could not verify the paid tier prices.
3. Kit: built for creators
Kit’s free plan supports up to 10,000 subscribers with unlimited landing pages, forms and broadcasts. Creator is $33 a month for 1,000 subscribers and adds unlimited automations and sequences. It fits newsletters, courses and paid communities. Pass if you run a local service business with no digital products.
4. Mailchimp: familiar, with a pricing cliff
Mailchimp Essentials starts at $13 a month for 500 contacts, Standard at $20 adds up to 200 flows and AI tools, and Premium jumps to $350. The free plan allows 250 contacts and 500 emails a month, capped at 250 a day. It offers 300 plus integrations. Pass if you want predictable costs as your list grows past the lower tiers.
5. Constant Contact: phone support and event tools
Constant Contact Lite is $12 a month, Standard $35 and Premium $80, with send limits of 10, 12 and 24 times your contact count. It lists live chat and phone support, a 30-day money-back guarantee and no free plan. Pass if you want deep automation on the cheapest plan, because Lite includes one automation template and one user.
What will email cost at different list sizes?
At 500 contacts, entry plans cost $12 to $33 a month. Costs rise with list size, and the vendor’s own calculator gives the exact figure for 5,000 or 25,000 contacts. A free plan works only while you stay under its cap: 250 subscribers at MailerLite and Mailchimp’s free plan, or 300 emails a day at Brevo.
Use annual billing only after a two-month trial. Constant Contact lists 15 percent savings, MailerLite 10 percent and Brevo 10 percent on yearly plans. Mailchimp, Constant Contact and Kit all offer trials or money-back windows, so test with real sends before committing.
Budget for list growth. A list that doubles in a year can move you up a tier. Revisit your plan every six months and delete contacts who have not opened in a year, since many vendors charge by contact count.

What rules apply to every email platform?
Three rules apply regardless of platform. The CAN-SPAM Act requires accurate headers, truthful subject lines, a physical address and an opt-out honored within 10 business days, with penalties up to $53,088 per violating email. Gmail asks bulk senders for SPF, DKIM and DMARC and one-click unsubscribe. Spam rates must stay under 0.3 percent.
Google defines a bulk sender as one sending close to 5,000 messages or more to personal Gmail accounts in 24 hours. It asks senders to keep spam rates below 0.1 percent and to avoid reaching 0.3 percent, and states that unsubscribe requests should be honored within 48 hours. Enforcement of its stricter requirements began in November 2025.
Most platforms handle authentication setup in their domain tools, but you still have to complete it for your own domain. Do that before your first campaign. A small business that sends fewer than 5,000 messages a day is not a bulk sender, but the same practices protect your inbox placement.
The FTC says the law applies to all commercial messages, including business-to-business email, and you stay liable even when you hire an email provider. Read the platform’s compliance help pages and keep consent records.
Which platform should you choose?
| If you are | Best pick | Why | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A solo owner with under 250 contacts | MailerLite Free | Full tools for $0 | 2,500 email cap a month |
| Sending daily to a small list | Brevo Free | 300 emails a day | Paid tier pricing is volume based |
| A creator or course seller | Kit Free or Creator | Built for digital products | Cost rises with automation needs |
| A team needing integrations | Mailchimp Essentials or Standard | 300 plus integrations | Premium jumps to $350 |
| An owner who wants phone support | Constant Contact Lite or Standard | Live chat and phone | Lite has one automation template |
Start free if your list is small. Move to a paid plan when you hit a cap or need automations, and never pay for a tier whose features you will not use this quarter.

What should you test during a free trial?
Test five things before you pay: deliverability, unsubscribe handling, automation limits, list import and export, and support. Mailchimp, Constant Contact and Brevo offer trials or free plans, and Kit and MailerLite have free tiers, so you can run the same test on three platforms in a week.
Send the same campaign from each platform to a few test inboxes at Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo and check whether it lands in the inbox or the spam folder. Click your own unsubscribe link and confirm it works at once, since the law gives you 10 business days and Google asks for faster handling.
Build one automation, such as a three-email welcome series, and see whether your plan allows it. Constant Contact Lite lists one automation template, while MailerLite Comfort lists 50 automations. Export your list as a CSV so you know you can leave without losing your contacts, and ask support one real question to see how quickly someone answers.
Moving platforms later is possible but takes a weekend. Plan for a new sending reputation, re-created forms and a re-built automation. Choose a platform you can stay on for at least a year.

Do I need SPF, DKIM and DMARC? Gmail requires them for bulk senders who send close to 5,000 messages a day. Smaller senders should still set them up to protect deliverability and brand trust. Your platform’s help pages explain how to add the records to your domain, and a quick test email confirms they work.
